Meet the 2016 Galleon Editorial Board

If you've been keeping up with the Galleon since it launched in October of last year, you probably have come across some familiar names in the bylines of the pieces featured on this site. While the Galleon is comprised of dozens of voices from the Christian Brothers University community and beyond, the staff writers are the ones who curate the weekly stories that make this site the active news magazine that it is. They've produced everything from thoughtful reflections on the refugee crisis (Preserving the Dignity of Syrian Refugees —Reflections from a Katrina Refugee) to entries riddled with vulnerability and candor (An Open Letter to Person Sad Like Me).

While the web is marked by a commitment to opaqueness and anonymity among its content creators, content sharers, and content users, we want you to know who's writing the stories you're reading in the new year. So without another word of pretext, here are the 2016 Galleon Editorial Board.

Things I like to Write About: I love to write non-fiction pieces, specially anything that helps spread knowledge in some way. If there’s one thing I would change about the world it would be: Empathy. I believe that if we all, myself included, took the time to understand others and empathize with what they're going through, the world would be a much better place.

If I was stranded on an island with one meal to eat it would be: My moms "chuletas al friquitin". They're the best thing in the whole world!

Most looking forward to in 2016: New adventures. 2015 was a year of changes for me- going from high school to college, living in Puerto Rico to living in the U.S. and much more. I can't wait to see where life will take in in 2016!

If I could go viral on the internet for one thing it would be: A PICTURE OF ME AND MY FIANCE, DRAKE

3 things I never leave home without: my macbook, cuticle remover, and a headband

Name: Servando Mireles

What I like to Write About: I like to write about experiences. The things I've been through and the things I've done. It reminds me of a photograph the way one can look at it and remember that moment in time. I get a feeling of nostalgia when I read the events that have transpired thought my lifetime.

If I could Change One Thing About the World it Would be...If there was one thing I would change about the world it would be that there is too much seriousness. Sometimes one needs to enjoy life and have a good laugh.

If I Could Go Viral On the Internet for One Thing it Would be: the picture of me with my trusty goat "White Lightning."

Most Looking Forward to in 2016: I would say that the thing I am looking forward the most in 2016 would have to be working in the Galleon and being part of this team. A little bit cliche but I am truly excited for this new opportunity.

The Galleon is curated and managed by Christian Brothers University, a Memphis-based university founded in the Lasallian tradition (a sect within the Catholic faith). Part of our founding mission is to uphold respect for all persons-regardless of political, religious, or social beliefs. As an institution, we take no stand on political matters; to do so would undermine our commitment to intellectual inquiry and thoughtful response to events taking place in our World by members of the CBU community.
