Why Give to Education?

By: Bob Arnold

Tired of Black Friday and Cyber Monday? Giving Tuesday was established in 2012 to better reflect the spirit of the season. It’s a day to remember – and support – the nonprofit organizations that are making a difference in our communities, cities, country, and the world.

CBU has been one of those organizations for more than 140 years. Our university is rooted in the heart of Memphis, as evidenced by our deep connections to the community. These include numerous K-12 outreach programs, dual enrollment programs for high school students, internship programs with more than 180 local businesses, and the fact that 85% of our undergraduates come from within 150 miles of the city.

At the same time, our reach is worldwide. CBU is part of a global network of Lasallian institutions. Graduates of our university can be found across the nation and the world, holding meaningful positions at all levels of business, government, and the social sector. The education and values instilled in these individuals during their CBU experience help keep them grounded, focused, and successful, regardless of where their paths may lead.

The local roots and global reach of CBU can both be traced back to the influence of the Christian Brothers. Their exceptional commitment to education continues to inspire the university’s efforts and its dedication to an accessible and affordable college experience for all.

The doorways to CBU’s academic buildings are adorned with signs that read Enter to Learn. Leave to Serve. This directive has guided the university through many decades of growth, providing its graduates with a steady focus and a clear duty in an ever-changing world.

As one Civil Engineering major told us, “It is because of CBU donors that I am able to attend my ‘dream college’ so close to home. […] The opportunities available for younger people like me in the field of Engineering are amplified by this University.”

Another student writes, “I am a student from California and without donations to CBU, I could not have traveled across the country to pursue my education at such an amazing institution. I am forever grateful.”

If you’re one of the thousands of people whose lives have been touched by the Christian Brothers and the university they founded, why not make it a point to show your gratitude by giving something back? A contribution -- of any amount -- to CBU on Giving Tuesday will empower the university to continue educating future generations of students, equipping them with knowledge and values that will serve them for a lifetime.

After the frenzy of the shopping season, it helps to remember that the holidays are really all about gratitude. We hope you’ll show your gratitude and support this Giving Tuesday by remembering Christian Brothers University.

The Galleon is curated and managed by Christian Brothers University, a Memphis-based university founded in the Lasallian tradition (a sect within the Catholic faith). Part of our founding mission is to uphold respect for all persons-regardless of political, religious, or social beliefs. As an institution, we take no stand on political matters; to do so would undermine our commitment to intellectual inquiry and thoughtful response to events taking place in our World by members of the CBU community.
